About The Springboard Charity

Springboard works to help young people and the unemployed into the industry, through a series of programmes that provide them with the skills they need to work within the hospitality industry. One such programme is KickStart which has been supported by The PM Trust since 2007

KickStartKickStart is aimed at young people who are leaving full-time education, and who do not have a clear idea about their next step - and are therefore at risk of unemployment. In particular, the initiative targets young people who have relatively low academic achievement, lack direction and are demotivated, or may not have the support to continue within education.

Over the course of three weeks, the programme provides an opportunity for young people to gain vital motivation, accredited entry-level industry qualifications and employability skills - all while allowing them to experience what it’s like to work in the hospitality industry. It also demonstrates the wide variety of roles and opportunities that are available to them.

Each year, KickStart helps around 150 young people, and as a result of taking part in the programme, 98% either return to education or move into employment.

Impact of The PM Trust Funding and Partnership

The PM Trust is a highly valued and long term supporter of KickStart in London. Since 2007, funds from The PM Trust have allowed Springboard to offer over 480 young people the necessary accredited industry qualifications for them to gain entry into an industry work placement. This has often led to re-entry into further education, or to a rewarding career in the capital’s hospitality industry.

Springboard and The PM Trust Awards

In addition to the funding support, The PM Trust publically acknowledges young people’s achievements on the programme, through The PM Trust Awards. This awards scheme provides the young people involved with an additional sense of achievement, a goal to aspire to and - for the recipients of the awards - an additional ‘qualification’ to use as part of their employability package. We were honoured in 2015 to rename the Star of the Future Award to The Robyn Jones Star of the Future Award in memory of the late Robyn Jones OBE. Robyn was a long term Trustee of Springboard, a dedicated supporter of The PM Trust, and an icon in the catering industry.

Case Studies

Danny LotterDanny Lotter did his placement at Delaware North working as a chef; he was studying catering and hospitality diploma level 1 at Havering College.  Having completed the KickStart programme in 2014 he worked closely with Executive Chef Mark Reynolds at Wembley Stadium. Mark Reynolds is acting as Danny’s mentor and is helped him to develop his cooking skills in the work place outside of college through his Level 2 qualification and in the summer of 2016 helped Danny secured an opportunity to work full time at the Shangri-La Hotel in the Shard, London.

Danny commented - ‘if it was not for Springboard’s KickStart Programme I would still be in my room playing computer games and doing nothing with my life.’

Danny is a regular alumni member and conducted a presentation to the audience at the 2015 KickStart Graduation as well as working at Springboard’s Big Event fundraiser in February 2016. - Danny Lotter - KickStart graduate 2014 and winner of the Robyn Jones Star of the Future Award in 2016
